floriculture-industryFloriculture industry is a part of the vast Horticulture industry and includes areas like general floriculture; commercial floriculture; and ornamental floriculture. While general floriculture deals with the processes such as production, processing, preservation, sales and marketing, and consumption of flowers, florist products and ornamental plants from a producer point of view, commercial floriculture deals with the domestic and global marketing of flowers, live plants and other related products, from a commercial point of view. Ornamental floriculture is all about the aesthetic application of floriculture.

Floriculture industry is an emerging industry with a great potential for employment generation across various categories. A trained floriculturist can find employment in areas such as farm production and glass house production of flowers and ornamental plants; exports and imports of flowers and live plants; tissue culture and micro propagation of ornamental plants; gardening and landscaping activities; production of essential oils; manufacturing and marketing of flower arts; nursery production of live plants, production and marketing of flower seeds etc. Some vacancies are available in pharmaceutical sector also.

Career opportunities are available with various floricultural nurseries and production units as production managers and floriculturists; with outdoor design consultancy firms as consultants and project coordinators; with real estate firms and city planners as landscape designers and landscapists; with various industrial houses as garden and landscape consultants; with hotels and hospitality industry as flower decorators and florists; and with cosmetics and perfume industry as technical consultants and research officers.

Candidates with an academic bent of mind can apply for teaching and research positions in various agricultural and horticultural universities; state-run floricultural demonstration farms and nurseries, research organizations engaged in the micropropagation of orchids, anthuriums and other commercial flowers and plants and several other research and development firms. Self employment as florists and floral designers; flower decorators and arrangers; garden and nursery owners; technical consultants; aroma therapists etc is also a good career option.

A bachelors or masters degree in Floriculture and Landscaping is the minimum eligibility to apply for various positions existing in the floriculture industry. These professional courses are offered at various agricultural and horticultural universities and proper training and skill set are imparted here by trained academicians.
