psychologyPsychology is a branch of social sciences which deals with the scientific study of the mental make up, attitude, behaviour, though processes, constitution, thinking, feelings and emotions of a human mind. That is, psychology is the study of human mind.  A person professionally qualified in psychology is called a psychologist and his profession requires him to deal with the people having mental disorders and emotional problems in order to treat them effectively by doing behaviour analysis and counselling.

Many leading universities offer graduate, post graduate and doctorate level courses in psychology and various specializations offered for masters and doctoral programmes include social psychology, child psychology, occupational psychology, clinical psychology, educational psychology, experimental psychology, forensic psychology, industrial-organizational psychology and applied psychology.

Based on their specializations, psychologists work as Cognitive Psychologists; Behavioral Psychologists; Social Psychologists; Forensic Psychologists; Educational Psychologists; Child Psychologists and so on.

Cognitive Psychologists: Cognitive Psychology is the branch of psychology that studies the internal states of the human minds, such as concentration, motivation, analytical skills, problem solving skills, decision-making ability, and capabilities of thinking, and attention. Cognitive Psychologists analyze the thinking processes and cognitive abilities of their patients and accordingly prescribe counselling and related therapies.

Behavioral Psychologists: Behavioral Psychology is based on the principles of behaviorism which says that behaviour of a person is acquired through mental conditioning. So Behavioral Psychologists focus on the behaviour analysis of their patients to determine the causes and remedies of their problems.

Social Psychologists: Social psychology deals with the subjects such as social influence, social perception, and social interaction. Social Psychologists focus on the social behaviour of their patients to analyze their problems.

Child Psychologists: are the professionals specializing in children’s cases.

As far as career opportunities of Psychologists are concerned, most of them are self-employed with a private practice and others are employed by schools and colleges, government organizations, and other private settings.
