Plastic surgery is a branch of medical sciences which deals with the process of reconstructing or repairing parts of the body by the transfer of tissue, either in the treatment of injuries or for cosmetic reasons.
Physicians who are aspiring to have a career as a plastic surgeon should enroll for residency training in plastic surgery with a well known medical institute. There are several reputed medical colleges and medical institutes which are providing residency programmes in plastic surgery. Normally the duration of this course is two years.
The field of plastic surgery is very vast and several subspecialties exist within this discipline such as cranio-maxillofacial surgery, breast reconstruction surgery, microvascular surgery, hand surgery, surgery for liposuction and tissue transfer, excisional surgery and cosmetic surgery
Cranio-maxillofacial surgery: is used to treat disorders and abnormalities of the bones of the face and skull such as cleft lip. Career available is as Cranio-maxillofacial surgeons.
Microvascular surgery: is performed to transfer tissues from one area of the body to another part in order to reconstruct it. Career available is as Microvascular surgeons.
Hand surgery: is performed to treat abnormal musculoskeletal problems of the hand using plastic surgery techniques as well as orthopaedic surgical techniques. Career available is as Hand surgeons.
Plastic surgery for Burning: is conducted to treat severe burn wounds of the critical patients by Burn surgeons
Cosmetic surgery: is mostly performed for aesthetic purposes such as repairing undesirable forms of body parts such as a nose or a lip. Nose surgery, lip surgery etc are all various forms of cosmetic surgery. Career available is as Cosmetic surgeons
Excisional surgery: is conducted to treat complex wounds and career available in this field is as Excisional surgeons
Breast reconstruction surgery: Mainly two types of breast reconstruction surgery are performed by cosmetic surgeons. One is breast augmentation surgery by implanting silicone implants or gel implants in the breast for increasing the breast size, and another is breast reduction surgery for reducing the size of the breasts.
Liposuction surgery: Plastic surgery conducted for removing excess fat from the body parts by using suction techniques is known as Liposuction. This is mainly used to treat cases of obesity
