Career Options in Organized Retailing
Retail Sales Personnel: If you like to interact with people and have good communication skills, a sales job in organized retailing will be the right choice. This is usually an entry level job and minimum qualification required is a graduation in any field. Since you are directly dealing with the customers, you are expected to have a mix of qualities such as a pleasant personality; problem-solving skills, and good interpersonal skills.
Store managers: Store managers are responsible for running the show in each individual retail store. If you have always wanted to manage your own retailing business and have a strong decision-making ability, fetch this opportunity. In this job profile, you need to understand and analyze the business and execute plans in order to boost sales and profits. Graduates in any stream can apply for this post. But a specialized qualification in retailing will be an added advantage.
Retail managers: The major responsibilities of a retail manager include planning, coordination and execution of store level operations. To achieve this, he needs to have an understanding about the habits and lifestyle of his customers. You should have minimum an MBA qualification to apply for this position.
Retail buyers: This position is also called “Procurement managers”. They are responsible for selecting and buying the merchandise for a store. They work either in own capacity or in close association with “quality managers” to ensure the quality of the merchandise they are buying. Experience or specialization in the profession is a pre-requisite for applying for this position.
Product Managers: They are responsible for product development. If you are creative and innovative and you have confidence that you can draw the end product from a concept, then you will be a success in product development. You should have minimum an MBA qualification to apply for this position.
Merchandise managers: They are expected to work in close association with the buyers, to understand the assortment plan and marketing strategy and with the store managers to plan for the visual display of the merchandise. You should have minimum an MBA qualification to apply for this position.
