Northland College

The Northland College founded in the year 1892 as North Wisconsin Academy is located in Ashland, very near to Lake Superior. The College got its present name in the year 1906.

The College provides courses in liberal arts and is closely associated with United Church of Christ. Northland College is accredited by the HLC- Higher Learning Commission.

Northland College offers undergraduate programs for its nearly 750 students through its more than 80 dedicated faculty members. The class size is usually small with the student faculty ratio at 13:1.

Northland College is known for its environmental friendly initiatives and associations and therefore is also popularly referred to as the Environmental liberal Arts college.  The College is located near to the Apostle Islands and the Chequamegon National Forest. As a result of this, the Northland College maintains healthy relationship with nearby Native American communities and offers related degree programs in Native American studies, history, culture & language to its students.

Northland College campus has two wind turbines on its campus and one geothermal cooling & heating system. The whole campus is designed in an environment friendly manner, including the Dexter Library and the Mclean Center among the nineteen buildings. Northland College is also a member of the Eco League which is a five member consortium of colleges– Green Mountain College, College of the Atlantic, Alaska Pacific University and the Prescott College.

Since the College is located near the lake, students get the opportunity to do their internship with many natural resources maintaining departments such as the Whittlesey Creek National Wildlife Refuge, Ashland Fisheries Resource Office and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.

Other Academic programs on offer by the Northland College include – pre-professional study programs such as pre medicine, pre dentistry, pre veterinary, pre law, engineering and Spanish. Majors offered include – Art, Humanities, English writing in the Humanities Department, Business, Sociology, social justice and community development in the Social Responsibility department.

Middle childhood to early adolescence education, early adolescence to Adolescence Teaching in the Education department, Natural resources such as emphasis on ecological restoration, fisheries ecology, wildlife ecology and their management under the Natural Resources department, Biology, environmental chemistry, environmental geosciences & mathematical sciences in the Environmental Sciences department etc.
