It is true that effectual counseling between individuals develop leadership qualities in them. This is the main reason why army units that function as groups try to instill respect and trust between the leaders and their subordinates for a strong and functional unit. This is done by imparting a strong Army counseling training program that fortifies unit consistency.
What Are The Qualities That A Counselor Should Posses?
The manual for Army Leadership maintains that efficient counselors should have the qualities that will earn him the respect and trust of his subordinates. The guidelines set by the manual for this, guides a counselor to first respect his juniors, enhance in himself as well as others, cultural awareness, credibility and empathy.
Approaches Adapted For Counseling
There are three main approaches towards counseling, the skills of which are imparted in the future army leaders. These approaches are nondirective approach, directive approach and the combined approach.
The nondirective approach enables the soldier to develop responsibility and maturity. The counseled soldier earns the capability to take on difficult tasks and responsibilities with maturity. A directive approach is adapted in soldier leaders who require further direction for counseling. Finally, a combined approach uses the tools and techniques of both directive and nondirective approach for strong Army counseling training.
The Three Types Of Developmental Counseling
Future leaders of the army are educated to recognize the three main categories of ‘developmental’ counseling. These are -event counseling, performance counseling and professional growth counseling. ‘Event counseling’ is specific for a situation, ‘performance counseling’ spans over a particular time frame and ‘professional growth counseling’ is specifically meant for imbibing the acumen needed for career growth and development. In a strong and efficient Army counseling training program, leaders are taught to utilize a counseling process in four stages.
The first stage is identifying the requirement for counseling. Counseling will lose its effectiveness if imparted on individuals who are not in need of counseling. This is why a leader will have to identify certain characteristics and traits in his junior to ascertain if the soldier requires counseling or not.
The second stage is the preparation for counseling. This stage is very important because after identifying the need for counseling a soldier, the leader will also have to identify the type of counseling that will be needed. Proper preparations are to be made before the process is started.
The third stage is conducting the session. A lot of things are to be taken care of when conducting a session of counseling with a soldier. The first and most important thing is the venue for counseling. The next important thing to be decided is the approach for counseling, that is directive, nondirective or combined approach for counseling.
The fourth stage is the follow up stage. Every leader will have to ascertain the effectiveness of his counseling and for this regular follow ups are needed to be carried out. An effective Army counseling training program teaches leaders to accept their boundaries and limitations and thus help them to mature as better leaders.
