Career Path in Dance and Choreography

There are majorly eastern and western schools of dance which are widely practiced across the world. Western dance school includes dance forms such as salsa, jive, foxtrot, waltz, samba, rumba, tango, and such other dance forms while eastern dance school mainly comprises of India’s famous classical dance forms of Bharatnatyam, Kuchupudi, Odissi, Kathak, Kathakali and Manipuri dance. Apart from these, there various old school dance forms such as ballet and musical operas, modern dance forms, various folk dance forms and ethnic dance forms.

Dance and Choreography is such a field where one should start at a very early age under the guidance of an experienced dance teacher to become a professional dancer or a professional choreographer. A career aspirant in this field should have immense talent, flexibility, graceful look, sense of rhythm, an expressive face, an expressive body language, impressive stage personality, good stamina and an ability to interpret various roles. Though there are no formal qualifications are required to become a professional dancer, there are several fine art institutes which offer bachelors, masters and doctorate programmes in various forms of dances. Major career choices available in this field are as dance instructor, performer, dance teacher, professional dancer, choreographer, art director and so on. Experienced dancers and choreographers can start their own dance and choreography schools at a later stage.

Abundant career opportunities are available for professional dancers in the entertainment and media industry. Dancers are highly sought after in motion picture industry, musical production houses, musical theaters, television reality shows, video production houses and dance troupe companies. Talented choreographers are very much in demand in movie industry for choreographing song and dance scenes and they are paid handsomely for their work.
