Career Options in Biomedical Science

Biomedical science is an allied health science which deals with the research and analysis of various causes of human diseases and the effect of various types of treatments used for curing those diseases. A health science professional qualified in biomedical science is called a biomedical scientist and he is responsible for all types of laboratory testing and analysis of human samples to determine the exact cause of diseases and the effect of various treatment procedures on the patient’s health and welfare.

Career aspirants are required to have at least a B.Sc. in Biomedical Sciences to start a career as a Biomedical Scientist. Candidates having qualifications in Biomedical Engineering are also recruited by various health care institutions for filling vacancies existing in biomedical departments.

Apart from Biomedical Scientist and Biomedical Engineer positions, various other career positions are also available for graduates in Biomedical Sciences. These include positions such as research scientists; laboratory analysts; food inspectors; health and safety executives; university and forensic laboratory officers, and biomedical executives in various pharmaceutical firms and medical equipment manufacturing firms.

Clinical Chemistry deals with the clinical diagnosis and toxicological studies of various human samples. Transfusion science deals with the blood transfusion process while Haematology is the study of the human blood cells. Histopathology is the study of various human tissues while Cytology is the study of the human cellular materials. Virology deals with various disease causing viruses while Bacteriology is the study of various disease causing bacteria. Immunology is the study of the immunity conditions of the human body.
