Athletic Training and Sports Medicine are allied health care professions with the major objectives of the provision of regular physical training for the sports personnel by constantly monitoring their physical and mental health as well as providing appropriate medical care in times of their need. Since a career in sports is highly demanding, both physically and mentally, sports persons are required to have a regular routine of physical training and mental skills development training programmes.
In order to begin a career as an athletic trainer or a sports medicine professional, one need to be a certified athletic trainer. There are several colleges and institutes that provide courses in athletic training and sports medicines. A bachelor degree in Athletic Training will need four years to complete and after the completion of the course, candidates are required to apply for a registration or a certification from authorized government agencies in order to practice as a certified athletic trainer.
Athletic trainers are employed by schools, colleges and universities as a Physical Trainer or Athletic Trainer for their sports teams. His major career responsibility includes overall health care of the students participating in various sports activities; managing and coordinating various sports activities for students; providing physical training and sports consultancy to the students etc.
Athletic trainers are also employed by sports clubs such as local football clubs; national football clubs, international football clubs; soccer clubs; baseball clubs etc and by professional sports teams such as national football teams; national cricket teams; national baseball teams; national hockey teams etc. Their major career responsibilities include planning and supervising physical training of the sports team members and providing medical care and rehabilitation facilities for injured sports personnel in case of injuries and accidents occur during various sports events.
Sports medical clinics employ professional athletic trainers for conducting various functions such as running sports medicine clinics, conduct sports medicine awareness programmes etc.
