Career In Biomedical Engineering

Biomedical engineering is a unique course in which a wide range of subjects are covered.  Various subjects like biology, physics, chemistry, mathematics, medicine and engineering are covered in this field.  It deals with the application of principles of natural science, especially biology and physiology, to clinical medicine. 

It is a branch of medical science which deals with the ability of human beings to tolerate environmental stress and variations. As many subjects are covered in one course, the candidates have a wider scope of job prospects when compared to other engineering courses.

They can be employed in medical field, educational institution, industries, pharmaceutical companies and government agencies.

The biomedical engineers are trained to consolidate biology and medicine along with engineering to deal with the problems related to mankind. They are trained to deal with both engineering and life science simultaneously.  The biomedical engineers specialize in different functional areas like biomechanics, biomaterials, bioinstrumentation, chemical engineering, rehabilitation engineering and clinical engineering.  They combine engineering principles and solve various medical problems.

They acquire various skills in different aspects of life.  Some of them are; they design computer software for medical instrumentation like computer tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, pace maker, drug infusion pumps etc.  They design artificial organs like artificial arms, legs, dental implants to replace its lost function.  They also involve in tissue culture.  Almost all the medical instruments used in the hospital are designed by the biomedical engineers.

The high school students who wish to join this course should be well versed in the basic science subjects like biology, physics, chemistry, computer science and mathematics.  They should study all these subjects in high school which will prepare them for doing graduation in biomedical engineering.

They should also be well versed in humanities and social science. They should possess a good command over English language their job involves technical writing and lot of communications with different types of people.  Knowledge of foreign language is an added advantage.

The duration of the degree course in biomedical engineering is four years.  After attaining the formal degree the candidates take upon the position of entry level engineer in various fields. They may work in pharmaceutical companies; undertake to work as clinical engineers in hospitals, or pursue for higher education.

Those doing their post graduation or doctorate in biomedical engineering have a great opportunity in research and development field. There is also a scope of biomedical engineers to enter law schools, where they plan to work with patent law and intellectual property which relates to the biomedical inventions.

As this course covers both medical and engineering side by side it has greater job opportunities and it is one of the hottest careers.
