If you are a nature-lover and have deep agricultural knowledge combined with good engineering skills, you can definitely think of making a career in Agricultural Engineering.

There is no dearth of jobs for Agricultural Engineers and to become a qualified Agricultural Engineer, you must have at least a B.Tech in Agricultural Engineering from any of the state agricultural universities or other recognized institutes. Numerous career options are available for Agricultural Engineers in Government and Public Sector Organizations; Agribusiness Firms; Food Processing Industry; Research Organizations and Laboratories; NGOs and Food Retail Industry.

Government and Public Sector Organizations: There are wide range of career options are available in this sector as agriculture officers in State Departments of Agriculture; as research scientists in agricultural research organizations and assistant/associate professors in state agricultural universities; as training associates in KVKs (Krishi Vigyan Kendras) etc.

Agribusiness Firms: There is a great demand for Agricultural Engineers in farm equipment manufacturing industry such as tractor manufacturing units and irrigation industry. The major job profile in irrigation industry includes design and development of pump systems; sprinkler, drip and micro-irrigation systems and sometimes, sales and marketing of products related to irrigation systems. In the tractor manufacturing units, major responsibility is to manage the manufacturing process of tractors and other related equipments.

Food Processing Industry: In food processing industry, major responsibilities include planning and construction of buildings for the processing of perishable agro commodities such as meat, dairy products, poultry and eggs; planning and construction of warehouses and godowns for the storage of foodgrains; construction of greenhouses and glass houses for the intensive cultivation of horticultural crops and sometimes designing and development of food processing machinery.

Numerous vacancies are available in food retail industry and in NGOs also. Agricultural Engineers are required by NGOs to work in rural areas as a part of their rural development programme.
