Embedded Software Development is a highly advanced field of Information Technology with a great career potential in almost all industries ranging from telecommunications to fast moving consumer goods to aerospace research. Embedded systems development industry requires highly skilled embedded systems engineers to design and develop sophisticated embedded softwares and technological applications. Modern day applications of Embedded Systems include hi-tech electronics gadgets such as multipurpose cell phones, personal digital assistants (PDAs), mobile broadband, MP3 players, hi-tech music systems etc.
Since Embedded Systems Development is a highly specialized field of study, there are very few education providers in this field but post graduate level qualifications are available in some of the leading global universities such as University of California.
A career in embedded systems is most suited for the candidates who are holding at least a bachelor level qualification in Electronics Engineering, or Computer Engineering, or Computer Applications. Candidates who wish to pursue a career in Embedded Systems Development must also have a good combination of Software and Hardware skills. Software skill sets required for the candidates include knowledge of the programming languages such as C++ and knowledge of the real-time operating systems such as Linux and Embedded Systems architecture and development techniques. Hardware skill sets required by the candidates include Digital and analog design techniques; Embedded Systems designing and development and other related skills.
A typical course curriculum of Embedded Systems Development includes concepts such as Designing and Development of Real Time Operating Systems; Designing and Development of Micro Controllers; Digital Designing and Architecture of Embedded Systems; Programming and Development of Embedded Systems Softwares and Embedded Communication Systems; Digital Processing Technology; Micro Processing Technology and all other related concepts.
Major career position available in this field is as “Embedded Systems Engineer” with Large MNCs and software firms.
