In Research And Development
In this department of food processing industry, researchers study the various chemical and biochemical changes that occur in processed or stored food. In doing so, they research on the effects of additives on food and its consequences on our immediate health.

Food technicians have a major role to play in providing the nation with enough crop production. Food technicians are also involved in research work like developing meat substitutes and other products with the same nutritional value as their original form.
Food inspectors or quality controllers work with government or private organizations in inspecting the standards of food supplied to customers, in hotels and various other public places. Food inspectors work closely with food producers to ascertain the quality of farming material like fertilizers and manures used for producing crops.
Dairy technologists too play their role as food inspectors in ensuring that the processed and unprocessed dairy products sold in the market are produced according to the stipulated food standards.
Food scientists can also choose to participate in the education system by offering their knowledge and experience in food processing and its aspects, to young food technicians. They can help institutes to prepare future food scientists.
Education Requirements Of A Food Scientist
Food scientists need to complete a bachelor’s degree in basic sciences with chemistry, biology or nutrition. They must possess knowledge of the various aspects of a food processing unit like freezing, canning, processing and storing.
After completing a bachelor’s degree in any of the above subjects of basic science, for a food scientist career, a major or specialization in any field of food technology will be ideal for starting a career as a food technologist. Those who choose to teach will need to complete their Post doctoral degree in a relative field of food technology.
All the above degrees should be attained from a recognized institute. The education department enlists the names of the accredited institutes that provide various degree courses in food technology.

With the growing consciousness on diet and food safety, the career of a food scientist is likely to get a boost in the coming years. In fact most of the top hotel chains employ a food scientist and a food supervisor to keep a vigil on the standards of food served in their restaurants. Food scientists are also playing a major role in finding ways to chart a healthy and nutritional diet for patients suffering from various chronic ailments.
